What is a Flywheel?
A flywheel is a heavy and precisely balanced metal disk that is connected to the engine's crankshaft and, thanks to its high moment of inertia, stores and discharges kinetic energy to ensure a stable and uninterrupted rotational movement. It prevents sudden ups and downs of engine speed by smoothing the fluctuations that occur in each combustion cycle, minimizes vibrations and extends the life of the transmission and drivetrain by balancing torque fluctuations. The flywheel-integrated ring gear, which plays a critical role in the initial movement of the crankshaft by the starter motor, makes it possible to start the vehicle by transferring torque to the clutch disk after the engine starts.
Flywheel Prices
The more complex the design of the flywheel, the more laborious it is to manufacture; simple models are priced low, while specialized or complex models are priced higher. The quality of the material used (e.g. more durable steel or lightweight aluminum) directly increases the cost. Vibration and durability tests after production are mandatory to ensure a safe product; the more extensive these tests are, the higher the price. Extra options such as perforated, segmented or full aluminum, depending on customer demand, require additional labor and drive the price up.
